Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has backed England Under-21 boss Lee Carsley to take over the vacant senior job.

    Gareth Southgate stepped down after Euro 2024, where the Three Lions finished as runners-up after losing 2-1 to Spain in the final, with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe the favourite to take over, followed by Graham Potter and Carsley.

    Asked if Carsley was ready for the big job, Elliott said: “Absolutely. Lee is an incredible manager and a great guy. He’s ready to step up.”

    “There are a lot of big clubs trying to get him, and that’s a credit to him and his coaching.”

    “Every time I come on the pitch for England I am free to enjoy my football. I feel like they are ready, they have talked about it (the FA).”
